Mohan Singh Oberoi was a renowned Indian businessman and hotelier, who was known for his contribution to the Indian hospitality industry. He was the founder and chairman of the Oberoi Group of Hotels, which is one of the largest hotel chains in India. Oberoi was born on 15 August, 1898 in Punjab, India.

He attended schools in his hometown and the surrounding town of Rawalpindi before passing the Intermediate College Examination in Lahore. However, due to financial constraints, he was unable to continue attending lectures. He instead studied shorthand and typing. Oberoi accepted a position as a front desk receptionist at The Cecil Hotel in Shimla in 1922 in order to flee the plague pandemic. He founded East India Hotels, currently known as EIH Ltd., in 1948.
