Early Life and Education
Shammi Narang was born on November 25, 1956, in Delhi. His grandfather served in the Indian Armed Forces, and his father also served in the Indian Army. He studied engineering at YMCA, Faridabad. Inspired by his father, he pursued hobbies like stunt riding and even worked as a stunt rider for Escorts company. Additionally, he is a ‘semi-trained’ singer.


Career Beginnings
Shammi Narang began his career with the Hindi division of Voice of America. An American technical director, Flanagan, heard his voice in an auditorium at IIT Delhi and offered him the opportunity to work at Voice of America. Later, he worked as a marketing professional at Larsen & Toubro and then joined Escorts as a stunt rider.
Journey with Doordarshan
In 1982, Shammi Narang auditioned for Doordarshan, where he was selected from nearly 10,000 candidates. His deep and commanding voice made him the face of Doordarshan news reading. His presentation style, precise pronunciation, and command over the language made him immensely popular among viewers. He worked with Doordarshan for about 20 years, presenting numerous important news bulletins during this time.

Voice of the Metro
Shammi Narang’s voice can be heard in the Hindi announcements of the Delhi Metro, Rapid Metro Gurgaon, Mumbai Metro, Bangalore Metro, Jaipur Metro, and Hyderabad Metro Rail. His announcements inform passengers about stations, which side the doors will open, and other instructions. His voice has become an iconic part of the metro travel experience.
Entrepreneurship and Training
After leaving Doordarshan, Shammi Narang established Delhi’s first digital recording studio, ‘Pin Drop,’ in 1998. This studio is popular among voice-over artists and musicians. He also serves as visiting faculty at MADarts, Jaspal Bhatti’s film school, and lent his voice to the award-winning two-minute animated film ‘Nanhi Chidiya.’

Personal Life
Shammi Narang’s wife, Dolly Narang, hails from Chandigarh and is a disciple of music composer Jaidev. She is known for her ghazal performances. The couple resides in South Delhi. Their son, Mohit Narang, is a professional musician and entrepreneur. Mohit’s wife is Ankita Narang. The family holds deep faith in family values and cultural arts.
