His father had a spice shop that was called Mahashian Di Hatti. At age 10, he dropped out of school and worked many jobs before joining his father's spice business to help him. With them, they expanded their business to Lahore, Shekhupura, Nankana Sahib, Lyallpur, and Multan. However, due to partition, they had to leave Sialkot. After spending some time in a refugee camp in Amritsar, he moved to New Delhi. He operated a tonga to make ends meet.

In 1958, he set up a pop-up store in Karol Bagh, Delhi; he advertised it, and it became popular. He opened another store in Chandani Chowk, which is a popular area of Delhi, before creating a manufacturing facility in Kirti Nagar. He registered his company with the name MDH in 1965. He helped the company grow to the point where it now has 18 manufacturing facilities and a revenue of more than $11 billion as of 2020. He was the face of the brand and was represented by a turban, hook moustache, glasses, and a pearl necklace. The packaging of the brand was also a key factor in making him one of the more endearing and likeable faces. The song of their advertisement grew so popular that people still sing along with it every day. MDH is now a household name in India.
