Purushottam Das Tandon an Indian freedom warrior born on August 1st, 1882, was from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. His objection towards the partition of India and his efforts to have Hindi designated as an official language of India are among the things for which he is most widely remembered. Rajarsh was the usual name given to him. He went by the name UP Gandhi.

A middle-class Khatri family in Allahabad welcomed Purushottam Das Tandon into the world. He began practising law in 1906 and, after earning an MA in history and a law degree, he became a member of the Allahabad High Court bar in 1908, joining as Tej Bahadur Sapru's junior. In 1921, he stopped practising law in order to focus on his civic engagements. At Victoria College in Gwalior, Tandon ji held the position of professor of Hindi.

Since he was a student in 1899, he has been a member of the Indian National Congress. He served as Allahabad's spokesperson on the All India Congress Committee in 1906. He was a member of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh investigation committee for the Congress Party. He was detained for taking part in the Salt Satyagraha and the Non-Cooperation movement, respectively, in the 1920s and 1930s. Before Mohandas K. Gandhi returned from the Round Table Conference in London in 1931, he and Jawaharlal Nehru were among those detained. He was well-known for his work in the farmer movements and presided over the 1934 Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha. In addition, he continued to serve as the head of the Lala Lajpat Rai-founded Servants of the People Society.

His controversial positions included support for Hindi, opposition to the partition of India, relationships with Nehru, and religious tolerance. In 1961, he received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour. He passed away on July 1, 1962. He was a remarkable freedom warrior who will never fade from our minds.
