Dr. Manmohan Singh (डॉ. मनमोहन सिंह)
Dr. Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). He completed his early education in Punjab and then earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Punjab University in 1952. He then went on to study at Cambridge University, where he earned a double first-class honors degree in economics in 1957. He completed his Ph.D. in economics at Oxford University in 1962. From 2004 until 2014, Dr. Manmohan Singh, an economist and politician from India, was the country's prime minister. He occupied the position for the first time as a Sikh.
After completing his education, Dr. Singh began a career in academia and held teaching positions at various universities, including Punjabi University, the Delhi School of Economics, and the University of Cambridge. He also served as an economist at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and later as an advisor to the Government of India. In 1991, Dr. Singh was appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India by the government and he served in that position for three years. He was instrumental in India's economic liberalization policies during the early 1990s as the country's finance minister. This has been acknowledged as a turning point in India's economic history.
Dr. Singh was elected as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, in 1991. He served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004. In 2004, he was elected as the Prime Minister of India as the leader of the Indian National Congress party. He served two consecutive terms as Prime Minister, from 2004 to 2014, making him the first Indian prime minister to serve two consecutive terms after Jawaharlal Nehru. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh implemented a number of policies and programs to promote economic growth and reduce poverty in India. He also worked to improve relations with Pakistan and other neighboring countries, and he supported the development of civil nuclear energy in India.
