Bhatia received his Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, India, and later obtained a Master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. After completing his education, he began his career as an engineer at Apple Inc. In 1996, Bhatia and Jack Smith co-founded Hotmail, which was one of the first web-based email services. The service quickly gained popularity, and in 1997, it was acquired by Microsoft for an estimated $400 million. Bhatia stayed with Microsoft for a year after the acquisition, serving as Vice President of the company's Interactive Media Group.

After leaving Microsoft, Bhatia founded a number of other companies, including Sabse Technologies, a provider of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services, and Jaxtr, a social messaging service.
